What Is a NIN and Why Do You Need One?
The National Identification Number (NIN) is an 11-digit unique identifier assigned to every Nigerian citizen and legal resident by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). It is now required for a wide range of activities — from obtaining a passport and driver's licence to registering a SIM card, opening a bank account, and accessing government social programs.

Who Is Eligible to Enroll?

Documents Required for NIN Enrollment
You must present at least one valid means of identification and supporting documents. Acceptable identity documents include:

- Certificate of Origin

Step-by-Step NIN Enrollment Process
- Locate a NIMC Enrollment Center: Visit the official NIMC website or use the NIMC mobile app to find the nearest enrollment center to you. Centers are available in all 36 states and the FCT.
- Gather Your Documents: Collect all required identity documents before visiting the center to avoid being turned away.
- Visit the Enrollment Center: Arrive at the center and join the queue. Enrollment is free of charge at official NIMC centers.
- Fill Out the Enrollment Form: You will be given a form to fill in your personal details — full name, date of birth, address, phone number, and next of kin information.
- Biometric Capture: A NIMC officer will capture your photograph, all ten fingerprints, and an iris scan. This data is stored securely in the national identity database.
- Receive Your Transaction ID: After enrollment, you will receive a Transaction ID or a printout. This is used to track your enrollment and receive your NIN.
- Receive Your NIN: Your NIN is typically sent via SMS to the phone number you provided within 24–72 hours of enrollment.
How Long Does Enrollment Take?
The enrollment process itself takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes per person, though waiting times at busy centers can be longer. It is advisable to arrive early in the morning on weekdays to avoid long queues.
Enrolling Children and Minors
Children under 16 can be enrolled with a Child NIN, which is linked to the parent or guardian's NIN. When the child turns 16, their biometric data is re-captured and their NIN is upgraded to an adult NIN. Required documents for child enrollment include the child's birth certificate and the parent or guardian's NIN.
Is NIN Enrollment Free?
Yes. Initial NIN enrollment is completely free at all official NIMC enrollment centers. Be wary of unauthorized agents charging fees for the basic enrollment process.
